In 3D modeling and animation, a pivot point is a crucial element that defines the center of transformation for an object. It determines how an object rotates, scales, and translates in 3D space. Understanding pivot points is essential for achieving precise control over your models and animations.
What Are Pivot Points Good For?
Control Over Transformations: The pivot point dictates how an object behaves when you apply transformations such as rotation, scaling, and translation. By adjusting the pivot point, you can control the axis around which the object rotates or the point from which it scales.
Creating Realistic Animations: In animation, the pivot point is vital for creating believable movements. For example, if you want a door to swing open, the pivot point should be placed at the hinges. This allows the door to rotate around the correct axis, resulting in a more realistic animation.
Efficient Modeling: When modeling complex shapes, having the right pivot point can simplify the process. For instance, if you are creating a wheel, placing the pivot point at the center allows for easy rotation and alignment with other components.
Grouping and Hierarchies: In a scene with multiple objects, pivot points can help maintain relationships between objects. For example, if you have a character holding a sword, the sword's pivot point can be set at the character's hand, allowing for natural movement when the character animates.

Setting the Pivot Point
You can set the pivot point of an object using several methods.
Adjusting the Pivot via the Inspector
The Inspector provides a straightforward way to set the pivot point for an object:
- Select the object whose pivot point you want to adjust.
- Navigate to the Inspector Panel, where you can view the properties of the selected object.
- Find the pivot point settings within the Inspector and manually enter the coordinates for the pivot point.
Modifying the Pivot with Transformation Tools
You can also set the pivot point using the Transformation Tools (Move, Scale, Rotate):
- Activate a Transformation Tool.
- Click the Pivot Edit Mode button on the Tool Options Bar, or use the shortcut
Insto toggle this mode. The gizmo will change to indicate that you are in pivot edit mode. - Click and drag the handles of the gizmo to reposition the pivot point as needed.
Tip
While dragging, you can hold down the Shift key to snap the pivot point to important positions of the bounding box of the active object (e.g., bottom center, corners).
Quick Centering of the Pivot
If you want to quickly center the pivot point of an object, you can use the following method:
- Select the object(s) for which you want to center the pivot.
- Navigate to Object > Transform > Center Pivot.
