Using Minis โ€‹

Minis are reusable 2D heightmap patterns that can be applied to voxel content in different ways.

When a Mini is used in an asset, its colors and materials are remapped to the target asset's Color Palette and Material Set.

Foxel supports several ways of using Minis: dragging and dropping, placing, projecting, and stamping.

Dragging and Dropping Minis โ€‹

You can drag a Mini from the Minis page into the Scene View.

If a compatible Voxel Layer is active and you drop the Mini onto that layer, Foxel inserts the Mini into the active voxel grid.

In this mode:

  • no new object is created
  • the Mini is converted into voxel data
  • the generated voxel data is inserted into the active Voxel Layer
  • the result becomes regular voxel data inside the active layer

The Mini is converted into an upright voxel shape. The Mini's 2D area becomes the base of the generated voxel data, and the Mini's height values extend upward along the positive Z axis.

Before insertion, Foxel optimizes the generated voxel grid size so the inserted data only uses the required bounds.

The Mini grid origin is placed at the center back of the generated voxel data. This origin is used as the placement anchor when the Mini is inserted into the active layer.

Placing Minis โ€‹

The Place Mini operation converts a Mini into voxel data and inserts it into a voxel grid at a chosen position.

It can also create multiple copies with defined spacing, which is useful for repeated structures and patterns.

For details, see Place Mini.

Projecting Minis โ€‹

Minis can also be projected onto existing voxel surfaces.

In this mode, the Mini is applied like a 2D pattern from one direction. Its colors and materials are transferred onto existing voxels, but its height values are not used.

This is useful when you want to apply surface detail without adding new voxel depth.

For details, see Project Mini.

Stamping Minis โ€‹

The Stamp Tool lets you apply the currently selected Mini directly with the mouse.

It provides a fast and interactive way to place Mini patterns into a voxel grid and is useful for quick detailing work.

For details, see Stamp Tool.
