Importing Minis

This section provides a comprehensive guide on how to import Mini Sets and images into your project, allowing you to enhance your creative workflow with predefined objects.

Steps to Import a Mini Set

  1. Activate the Mini Sets Tab.
  2. Click on the Import button. Import
  3. Select the files you want to import and click Open.

This will create a new Mini Set for each successfully imported file.

Steps To Import Minis to an Existing Mini Set

  1. Open the Mini Editor.
  2. Click on the Import button. Import
  3. Select the files you want to import and click Open.

This will not create a new Mini Set; instead, it will add the new Minis generated from the imported files to the current Mini Set.

Importing images

You can import an image to automatically generate an entire Mini Set in a single step. The imported image is divided into squares, with each non-empty square being converted into a Mini.

The image must have a width of 128, 256, or 512 pixels. The size of each square is determined by dividing the width of the image by 16, which is the required number of squares per row. The height of the image should then be the square size multiplied by the number of rows, which can range from 1 to 16. A maximum of 256 Minis can be extracted from a single image.

In Foxel, the Minis have a fixed size of 32x32 pixels. If the imported image width is 256 or 128 pixels, resulting in square sizes of 16 or 8 pixels, the imported squares will be centered within the resulting Mini.

The colors from the image are mapped to the Color Palette of the active project.

The resulting Minis will be flat, as standard images do not contain height information. To add elevation to specific areas of the Mini, use the Mini Editor.

Importing Heightmap assets

You can also import Heightmap assets to generate Minis. Since the size of Heightmaps is limited to 256 pixels, and a Mini has a fixed size of 32 pixels, a maximum of 64 Minis can be generated from a single Heightmap. The imported Heightmap must have one of the following sizes; otherwise, the import will not be successful:

Heightmap SizeNumber of Minis
256x25664
128x12816
64x644
32x321

The colors and materials from the Heightmap are mapped to the Color Palette and Material Set of the active project.

Unlike the import of images, which generates Minis without height information, importing Heightmaps will create Minis that include height data. Please note that the height of Minis is capped at 32.

Importing Mini Sets from other projects

Because Mini Sets utilize the Color Palette and Material Set of their respective projects, they must be imported when coming from different sources. When you import a Mini Set from another project, a copy of the file is saved in the \Minis subfolder of the active project, and the colors and materials are mapped to the Color Palette and Material Set of the current project.
