Customizing Shortcuts

A shortcut is a key or key combination that is bound to a command. For example, the shortcut Ctrl+O is bound to the Open Asset command. If you want to modify the default shortcuts or add new ones, you can use the Shortcut Editor.

Shortcut Editor

The Shortcut Editor enables you to view and manage current keyboard shortcut assignments.

To open the Shortcut Editor:

  1. Choose Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts

The Shortcut Editor is divided into the three areas Keyboard, Category List, and Command List.

Keyboard

The Keyboard displays a simplified version of a U.S. keyboard layout.

To see what command is assigned to a key, hover the mouse over the key and the assigned command will appear in the tooltip. Clicking a key to which a command is assigned selects that command in the Commands list and its category in the Category list.

Selecting one of the modifier keys Shift, Ctrl, or Alt updates the keyboard to show which combinations of shortcuts and modifiers are assigned to commands. Active modifier keys are highlighted in blue.

Category List

All available commands are grouped into categories which are listed in the Category List. Select a category to display its commands in the Command list. The Category List also contains entries for All Commands and for Binding Conflicts. Selecting All Commands lists all available commands in the Command List, while Binding Conflicts lists the commands that share a shortcut and are therefore conflicting.

Command List

The Command List shows all commands and shortcuts of the selected category.

Managing Shortcuts

To add or modify a shortcut:

  1. Double-click the command in the Command List. The background on the right side of the command entry turns red.
  2. Press the key on your keyboard that you want to assign. Also make sure you hold down any modifier keys (Ctrl, Shift, Alt) that you want to include in the shortcut.

To remove a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the command in the Command List
  2. Select Remove from the context menu

To reset a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the command in the Command List
  2. Select Reset to Default from the context menu

Binding Conflicts

Each command in Foxel can have only one shortcut. However, the Keyboard Editor allows you to assign a shortcut to multiple commands. Once a shortcut is assigned to multiple commands, there is a binding conflict that must be resolved before the changes to the shortcut mapping can be saved.

Commands with a binding conflict are marked with the warning sign ⚠️.

To resolve a binding conflict:

  1. From the Category List select Binding Conflicts
  2. Select a conflicting command from the Commands list and use the methods described in managing shortcuts to resolve the problem.

Repeat for all conflicts until the list is empty.
