Translating Voxels
The Translate operation enables you to reposition selected voxels within a voxel grid.
Note
This function does not translate the entire object; the coordinates of the object remain unchanged.
Translating Voxels via Dialog
Steps to Translate Selected Voxels via Dialog
- Activate a voxel grid.
- Select the voxels you want to move.
- Navigate to Voxel > Transform > Translate.
- Adjust the translate parameters in the translate dialog.
- Click OK to translate the selected voxels.
Additionally, the Translate operation can adjust the grid offset, which is an internal value that determines the local voxel grid origin for a Voxel Layer. This offset is not visible or directly changeable by the user, but it plays a crucial role in how the voxels are positioned relative to the Voxel Layer.
Steps to Change the Grid Offset via Dialog
- Select one or more Voxel Layers, ensuring that no voxels are selected in the active voxel grid.
- Navigate to Voxel > Transform > Translate.
- Adjust the translate parameters in the translate dialog.
- Click OK to translate the grid offset.
This action will change the local origin of the voxel grid, influencing how voxels are arranged in relation to the Voxel Layer.
Translate Dialog Parameters
- Translate: Enter the offset for the selected voxels or the grid offset.
- Hide Selection: Enable this option to toggle the highlighting of selected voxels, which can enhance your ability to visualize the changes more effectively.
Translating Voxels with the Move Tool
You can also use the Move Tool to translate selected voxels directly with your mouse. This method provides an intuitive way to achieve the same result as the Translate operation, allowing for more hands-on adjustments.
Steps to Translate Voxels with the Move Tool
- Activate a voxel grid.
- Select the voxels you want to translate.
- Activate the Move Tool or use the Move Tool shortcut by holding down the
Ctrlkey. This will display the Move Tool gizmo at the center of the voxel selection. - Click and drag one of the arrows to move the selected voxels along a specific axis,
or click and drag the square between two arrows to move the selected voxels in a 2D plane,
or click and drag the yellow cube to freely move the selected voxels. - Release the mouse button to place the selected voxels at the new location.
Note
If you hold down the Alt key while using the Move Tool, a copy of the selected voxels will be created at the original position.
Translating Voxels with Keyboard Shortcuts
You can also reposition selected voxels using keyboard shortcuts, a feature known as nudging. This allows for precise adjustments in small increments without needing the Move Tool or the translate dialog. Nudging is based on the camera view.
Steps to Translate Voxels with Keyboard Shortcuts
- Activate a voxel grid.
- Select the voxels you wish to move.
- Use the arrow keys to nudge the selected voxels by one unit relative to the camera view.
INFO
Additionally, holding down the Shift key while nudging will move the selected voxels by 10 units. Holding down the Alt key will create a copy of the selected voxels.
