Types of Assets

In Foxel, assets are the building blocks that allow users to create, animate, and manipulate voxel-based environments. Understanding the different types of assets available is essential for maximizing the potential of your voxel creations. This section provides an overview of the four primary asset types you can utilize within your projects:

  • Voxel Scene: The cornerstone of your voxel creations, Voxel Scenes are complex, animated environments that bring your ideas to life. They serve as the primary canvas for your voxel-based projects, allowing for intricate designs and dynamic animations.

  • Voxel Movie: Think of Voxel Movies as the 3D equivalent of GIF files. These assets display a sequence of voxel models, each shown for a specific duration, creating a captivating visual experience. Voxel Movies are perfect for showcasing frame-by-frame animations within your scenes.

  • Mesh Asset: Mesh Assets are imported from external mesh files and can be integrated into your voxel projects. Once imported, these assets can be voxelized, allowing them to blend seamlessly into Voxel Scenes as Reference objects. This feature expands the creative possibilities by incorporating detailed models into your voxel environments.

  • Heightmap: Heightmaps are unique 2D assets that contain pixel data along with additional height information. They can be easily converted into 3D voxel data, enabling the creation of terrains and landscapes. Heightmaps provide a straightforward way to add depth and complexity to your voxel scenes.

In the following pages, we will delve deeper into each asset type, exploring their features, uses, and how to effectively incorporate them into your projects.
