Edit Voxel Keyframes

Voxel Movies are focused on editing one keyframe at a time.

A Voxel Movie contains Voxel Keyframes. Each Voxel Keyframe is a voxel object with an additional Duration property that defines how long it is shown in the animation.

Why This Matters

Frame-by-frame animation in Foxel is built by editing one Voxel Keyframe at a time.

Once that model is clear, the workflow becomes easier to follow:

  1. Select or create a Voxel Keyframe.
  2. Set how long it should be shown.
  3. Edit its voxel content.
  4. Move to the next keyframe that needs to change.

Keyframe Editing Basics

Voxel Movies are simpler than Voxel Scenes.

They are focused on direct frame-by-frame voxel editing instead of scene hierarchy animation.

Important differences include:

  • Voxel Movies contain Voxel Keyframes only.
  • There is no parenting, rotation, or scaling.
  • Only the current keyframe is shown for editing.
  • Voxel Keyframes use the same voxel editing tools used elsewhere in Foxel.

Selecting A Keyframe

You can select the keyframe you want to edit in two ways:

Select From The Hierarchy

Select the Voxel Keyframe directly in the Hierarchy.

Use this when you want to choose a specific keyframe by name or position in the list.

Select From The Timeline

Move to the frame you want in the Timeline.

Foxel automatically selects the Voxel Keyframe displayed at that frame.

Use this when you want to work visually through the animation timing.

Adding A Keyframe

To add a new Voxel Keyframe, use one of these methods:

  • Click Add Voxel Keyframe below the Hierarchy.
  • Use Object > Add Voxel Keyframe.

The new keyframe is inserted after the current keyframe.

It starts as a copy of the current keyframe, so you can adjust the next frame without rebuilding it from scratch.

Setting The Duration

The Duration of a Voxel Keyframe defines how many frames it is displayed before the next keyframe is shown.

You can change the duration in two ways:

  • Edit the Duration property in the Inspector.
  • Use Object > Set Duration.

Set Duration In The Inspector

Select the Voxel Keyframe, then edit its Duration property in the Inspector.

Use this when you are already editing keyframe properties.

Use Set Duration

Select the Voxel Keyframe, then use:

Object > Set Duration

Use this when you want to change the duration through a menu command.

Editing The Voxel Content

Once a Voxel Keyframe is selected, you can edit its voxel content directly with the normal voxel editing tools.

A common workflow is:

  1. Select or create a Voxel Keyframe.
  2. Adjust its Duration.
  3. Edit its voxel content.
  4. Move to another frame or keyframe.
  5. Continue editing the animation.

Because each new keyframe starts as a copy of the current one, you can create gradual changes by duplicating a keyframe and editing only what needs to change.

What To Remember

  • Voxel Movies are edited one keyframe at a time.
  • Voxel Movies contain Voxel Keyframes only.
  • There is no parenting, rotation, or scaling.
  • Keyframes can be selected in the Hierarchy or through the Timeline.
  • New keyframes start as copies of the current keyframe.
  • Duration controls how long a keyframe is shown.
  • Voxel content is edited with the normal voxel tools.
