Place, Project, and Stamp: Three Ways to Use Minis

Foxel supports three main ways of using Minis:

They all use the same reusable Mini data, but they apply it in different ways.

Why This Matters

Minis are reusable detail patterns, but the right workflow depends on what kind of result you want.

The same Mini can become inserted voxel content, projected surface detail, or a fast interactive stamp.

The important question is:

Should the Mini create voxel data, modify an existing surface, or be applied quickly by hand?

Place Mini

Place Mini converts a Mini into voxel data and inserts it into a voxel grid at a chosen position.

It can also create multiple copies with defined spacing.

This makes it useful for:

  • Repeated structures
  • Repeating patterns
  • Inserted Mini-based geometry
  • Detail elements that should become voxel content

A good way to think about Place Mini is:

text
Place Mini = Mini becomes voxel content inside the grid

Use Place Mini when the Mini should create or insert voxel structure.

Project Mini

Project Mini applies a Mini onto existing voxel surfaces like a 2D pattern from one direction.

Its colors and materials are transferred onto existing voxels, but its height values are not used.

This is useful when you want:

  • Surface detail without new voxel depth
  • A flatter applied pattern
  • Directional application onto an existing surface
  • Color and material transfer without changing the surface height

A good way to think about Project Mini is:

text
Project Mini = Mini affects the surface without adding height-based depth

Use Project Mini when the Mini should behave like a surface-applied 2D pattern.

Stamp Tool

The Stamp Tool applies the currently selected Mini directly with the mouse.

This provides a fast and interactive way to place Mini patterns into a voxel grid.

Stamping is useful when you want:

  • Quick detailing
  • Repeated manual placement
  • Fast hands-on workflow in the viewport
  • Interactive placement without opening a separate operation dialog each time

A good way to think about Stamping is:

text
Stamp Tool = fastest interactive Mini workflow

Use the Stamp Tool when you want to apply Minis directly while working in the viewport.

The Practical Difference

A simple rule is:

  • Use Place Mini when the Mini should become inserted voxel data.
  • Use Project Mini when it should behave like a surface-applied 2D pattern.
  • Use the Stamp Tool when you want quick direct application with the mouse.

What To Remember

  • Foxel supports three main Mini workflows.
  • Place Mini converts the Mini into voxel data and inserts it.
  • Place Mini can create multiple copies with spacing.
  • Project Mini transfers color and material onto existing voxels.
  • Project Mini does not use the Mini’s height values.
  • Stamp Tool applies the selected Mini interactively with the mouse.
  • The right workflow depends on whether you want geometry, surface transfer, or speed.
