Move an Object With the Gizmo

The Move Tool is the fastest way to move objects directly in the scene.

Its gizmo gives you several ways to control movement, from single-axis dragging to full free translation.

Why This Matters

You can move objects from the Inspector or with the Translate dialog, but the Move Tool is usually the fastest option when you want to reposition something directly in the scene.

Use it when the movement is easier to judge visually in the Scene View.

How To Use the Move Tool

To move an object with the Move Tool:

  1. Activate the Move Tool.
  2. Select the object or objects you want to move.
  3. Drag a gizmo handle to move the selection.

The handle you drag determines how constrained the movement is.

Move Gizmo Handles

The Move Tool uses a gizmo with several handle types:

  • 3 arrows for movement along a single axis.
  • 3 squares for movement inside a plane.
  • 1 center cube for free translation.

Axis Handles

The arrow handles move the selected object along one axis.

Use them when the object should move only left, right, up, down, forward, or backward along a specific axis.

Plane Handles

The square handles move the selected object inside one plane.

Use them when the object should move freely in two directions while staying locked to the third axis.

Center Cube

The center cube moves the selected object freely.

Use it when the exact axis constraint is less important and you want to reposition the object quickly.

Move Tool Options

Before moving, you can set several options in the Toolbar:

  • Transform Space
  • Pivot Mode
  • Round Position
  • Snap Mode

Transform Space

Transform Space switches between Global and Local.

  • Global aligns the gizmo to the global axes.
  • Local aligns the gizmo to the object's local axes.

Use Global when movement should follow the world axes.

Use Local when movement should follow the selected object’s own orientation.

Pivot Mode

Pivot Mode switches between Object Center and Custom Pivot.

  • Object Center uses the object's center as the transform pivot.
  • Custom Pivot uses the custom pivot set in the Inspector.

Use Object Center for normal object movement.

Use Custom Pivot when the object should move or transform around a specific pivot setup.

Round Position

When Round Position is enabled, Foxel rounds the object's position values after you release the mouse button.

This is useful when you want cleaner position values after interactive movement.

Use it when the exact drag result should be cleaned up into simpler coordinates.

Snap Mode

Snap Mode controls which snap points are used while moving.

Available snap modes include:

  • Snap To Bounding Box
  • Snap To Base Grid

Snapping While Moving

You can snap positions while using the Move Tool.

To snap while moving:

  1. Hold Shift while dragging.
  2. Move the cursor to a snap point.
  3. Release the mouse button.

While Shift is held, available snap points are highlighted in yellow.

Snap To Bounding Box

Snap To Bounding Box uses bounding-box corners as snap points.

Use this when objects should align to the bounds of other objects.

Snap To Base Grid

Snap To Base Grid uses grid intersections as snap points.

Use this when objects should align to the scene grid.

Important Note

If voxels are currently selected, the Move Tool moves the selected voxels instead of the object.

Deselect the voxels if you want to move the object itself.

This distinction matters because Foxel supports both object transforms and voxel selection transforms.

What To Remember

  • The Move Tool is the fastest way to move objects directly in the scene.
  • Arrow handles move along one axis.
  • Square handles move inside a plane.
  • The center cube moves freely.
  • Transform Space switches between global and local space.
  • Pivot Mode switches between object center and custom pivot.
  • Round Position rounds position values after mouse release.
  • Holding Shift shows snap points in yellow.
  • Snap To Bounding Box uses bounding-box corners.
  • Snap To Base Grid uses grid intersections.
  • If voxels are selected, the Move Tool moves the voxel selection instead of the object.
