Box Mode

Box Mode edits a three-dimensional region instead of a flat area.

You define two opposite corners of a box, Foxel shows a preview, and then you can adjust that preview before applying the active tool.

Why This Matters

Box Mode is more than “make a box.”

It is a preview-based 3D editing workflow. Once the preview appears, you can still reshape and reposition it before anything is applied.

This makes it useful for larger edits where you want to define a volume first and confirm it afterward.

How Box Mode Works

Box Mode edits a three-dimensional region.

To start:

  1. Click a voxel to set the first corner.
  2. Click a second voxel to define the opposite corner.

Foxel then shows a preview box that represents the affected volume.

The active tool is not finalized until you apply the preview.

The Preview Box Is Still Editable

As long as the preview box is visible, it has not been finalized yet.

You can still:

  • Resize it.
  • Move it.
  • Apply it.
  • Cancel it.

This lets you correct the volume before committing the edit.

Resize The Preview Box

Drag one of the sides of the preview box to resize it in that direction.

Use this when the initial box is close, but the affected volume still needs adjustment.

Move The Preview Box

You can move the preview box in multiple ways:

  • Hold Ctrl and use the gizmo.
  • Use the arrow keys to move it by 1 unit.
  • Hold Shift with the arrow keys to move it by 10 units.

Use this when the box has the right size but needs to be placed somewhere else.

Apply Or Cancel The Box

To apply the preview, click one of its sides.

To cancel the preview, press Esc.

Apply the box only when the preview covers the region you want to affect.

Shape Option

By default, Box Mode processes the full box volume.

You can also choose a different 3D shape in the Toolbar.

Available shapes include:

  • Box
  • Sphere
  • Pyramid
  • Cone
  • Cylinder
  • Wedge

The active tool is then applied only to the voxels that belong to the selected shape inside the box.

Shape Notes

You can change the orientation of the active shape using the Rotate 90° and Flip buttons in the Action Bar.

If you use the Wedge or Pyramid shape, hold Shift while resizing the box to snap the size to perfect angles.

This helps keep angled forms cleaner and easier to control.

When To Use Box Mode

Use Box Mode when the edit should have depth, not just width and height.

It is especially useful for:

  • Blocking out forms
  • Creating large solid shapes
  • Erasing a 3D region in one step
  • Selecting a 3D region
  • Applying the active tool to a controlled volume

What To Remember

  • Box Mode works between two opposite corners.
  • Foxel shows a preview before applying the edit.
  • The preview can still be resized and moved.
  • Apply the preview by clicking one of its sides.
  • Cancel the preview with Esc.
  • Box Mode supports alternate 3D shapes in the Toolbar.
  • Shape orientation can be changed with Rotate 90° and Flip in the Action Bar.
